Kids Taking Communion

Understanding Communion

Communion is a big deal. However, without understanding we miss out on much of the power of what's happening when we participate in it. Here at LJCC it's so valuable we offer it the first Sunday of every month and encourage families to participate together. At the same time we understand that teaching kids about communion can be difficult if you're not a theologian. (And even then it is not easy as many theologians dive so deep into it that it's hard to understand what they're talking about.)

Below are two links to a tool you can use to teach your child about communion.(If nothing else, itíll be a good review for you.) This is not a quick process and this tool is designed to take an hour and a half to two hours. I've used this tool with second and third graders and it will work great for kids as old as 6th grade, but because of the reading and writing requirements, you may want to wait to use this tool as presented for kids younger then 2nd grade.

You'll want to spend some time preparing for this as well. There are two documents below. One is for you. This has all the helps, cheats, and answers. Print this out and go through it. Look up the scriptures yourself, work through the questions, and study the analogies used.

When you're ready print up the Kid version of this form, sit down with your child and work through it. The goal is for them to look up the passages, answer the questions, and discover the truths, wonders and mystery of communion for themselves. Fast completion is not the point, learning is. If you have any questions as you work through this (and there are so many perspectives on Communion you probably will) please let us know!
