Mentoring Ministry Overview

will flow from within him.” John 7:37-38.
God desires for us to grow and thrive in his grace and our knowledge of him. Spiritual growth is a gift from God under whom we apply ourselves in skillful development. Personal responsibility within authentic community is essential for growth to occur. We are responsible for our own growth and we need the help of others to do it!
At LJCC, we've developed a Mentoring Ministry to help foster personal spiritual growth. The program essentially follows two tracks. Track one is mentor-mentee mentoring. Someone with more knowledge and experience guides someone with less. Track two is peer-to-peer mentoring. Two or more people with similar knowledge and experience work together.
The goal is the same in both tracks: Accountability and support that leads to significant personal growth. Growth over time is transformation! The elements are the same in both tracks too: Reading, thinking, praying, discussing, listening and doing something with it.
Beyond these essential things there are endless variations. How often you meet, where you meet, what you read, what needs you address, how long you commit to the mentoring process and what issues you bring.
Tools for Getting Started: The Spiritual Growth Journal and Spiritual Mentor's Manual
We have produced two new tools for helping you grow spiritually while being a source of strength and encouragement to others. The first is the Spiritual Growth Journal, designed to help you see your spiritual life as three overlapping areas: Biblical Knowledge, Emotional Intelligence and Ministry Skills. When these are neglected, our spiritual growth suffers, stagnates, and stalls.
The second is the Spiritual Mentor’s Manual, which will guide you in seeing how you can be an influence in the spiritual growth of those around you. As you grow spiritually, you will experience increasing wholeness and fullness in your life. From the overflow of this increasing wholeness and fullness you have something to give others.
Both the Spiritual Growth Journal and Spiritual Mentor’s Manual can be purchased for just $18 each at church or by calling Mary Ruyle at the church office (858) 558-9020, ext. 207.
Organize Your Experience
Here are four words that will help you organize your mentoring experience: Pray, Prepare, Prioritize and Practice.Pray about it. Who do you connect with? Ask, seek, knock and doors will open!
Prepare for it. Mentor's Manual. Spiritual Growth Journal. Soap. Life Group.
Prioritize it. You must make room in your life which means scheduling availability.
Practice it. You can only improve by doing it. Ability and availability are co-partners!
Remember, you don’t need to know where you are going as long as you are going with Jesus who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He will guide you as we go. Ask, seek, knock listen, trust and choose.
