Divine intervention
I have had several experiences where I believe the Lord guided me to a longer life with a specific set of purposes.
One of those experiences came in 1968, the day after I rejoined the Richard Nixon presidential campaign to manage communications. I arrived at my hotel suite in New York, and did a national telecast on my view of Robert Kennedy's win in the California primary.
I turned on my television and saw that Robert Kennedy had been assassinated. He was shot in a room in the Ambassador Hotel, a room President Nixon and I had used many times as an exit from a ballroom.
I looked at the scene and considered the people involved and the location. It made me wonder whether I could fully join the campaign without being afraid to stand next to the candidate. It was a time when Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated, George Wallace had been shot and now Bobby Kennedy.
As I watched, I prayed for guidance. I believe the message was for me to be bold and trust in God as to what my fate would be. Following that revelation, I joined the campaign fully and spent a good part of my time in the presidential race standing side by side with a candidate who could have been a target.
This has led me to believe that God guides our path. The lesson to me was to do your best as fearlessly as possible and trust in the Lord.
